Prof. Emre Kongar

is a Professor of Sociology, Yildiz University,
Former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture,
Writer, Columnist in Turkish Daily "Cumhuriyet"

Prof Kongar received his undergraduate degree from Faculty
of Political Sciences, Ankara University, his M.S.W. from University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Hacettepe
University. He is the founding father and director of "School of
Social Work", Hacettepe University. In addition to his professorships,
previously in Hacettepe University and currently in Yildiz University,
and numerous appointments such as Advisor to the Ministry of Tourism
(1976-1979), Member of the "High Council for Culture"(1978-1979),
Advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports(1978-1979), Undersecretary
for the Ministry of Culture(1992-1995), Prof. Kongar has published more
than 50 academic papers, more than 100 popular articles, and 23 books,
on culture and social, economic and political change process of Turkish
society. His memoirs, "While I was the Undersecretary", published in 1996
has become one of the best sellers. "The Social Structure of Turkey",
published in 1976, reached to its tenth edition.
